A new outpatient mental health facility for Fort Harrison VA Medical Center

Our team was charged with creating a standalone Outpatient Mental Health facility at Fort Harrison VA Medical Center β€” designed to provide veterans with the privacy, security, and healing space they deserve. This one-story building was built to integrate smoothly with the existing campus while prioritizing energy efficiency, patient comfort, and overall functional elegance.

Challenge

We had to do more than just fit a building on a site. Our challenge was to minimize the footprint while maximizing its potential. The facility had to meet all VA program requirements, maintain privacy, and adapt to the local climate, which meant avoiding harsh Northern and Southwest exposures. Security, flexibility, and future expansion were critical, but we knew we could handle it.

Solution

We crafted a compact yet highly functional space, with clear separation between clinical and administrative areas to ensure privacy and reduce stress. Natural light is central to the design, creating a therapeutic environment for veterans. The HVAC system starts independent but is future-proofed for easy integration with the central campus plant. Security is locked in, with top-tier access control and surveillance linked to the existing campus system for 24/7 monitoring.

Result

The facility delivers a secure, private, and comfortable environment where veterans can truly heal. With energy-efficient systems, full compliance with VA standards, and room for future growth, this building is built to last. It's more than just a structure β€” it’s a space that supports the mission of Fort Harrison VA Medical Center to provide exceptional, comprehensive care.
