A renovation and expansion for the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center

We were tasked with revitalizing Building 3 at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center through a modern addition and strategic renovations. We combined refreshed design and architecture with a commitment to preserving the building’s historic character. The result is a high-functioning, modernized space that still honors its Colonial Revival roots, all while improving patient care and staff operations.

Challenge

Building 3 was no longer meeting the evolving needs of the VA medical services. The existing pharmacy areas were outdated, and several internal and external spaces needed ADA compliance. At the same time, we had to work within the constraints of the historical preservation guidelines. On top of that, we had to manage the phased construction to ensure no disruption to ongoing healthcare services, particularly the critical pharmacy functions.

Solution

Our team tackled the project with a phased, strategic approach. The three-story addition expanded the building, providing the necessary space for updated outpatient pharmacy and administrative areas. We carefully renovated the existing space, improving pharmacy layouts and adding much-needed waiting and counseling rooms. To respect the building's historical significance, we incorporated matching brick and cast stone elements in the addition, ensuring a visual connection to the original structure while clearly differentiating the new from the old. Additionally, we revamped the parking areas, improving both accessibility and capacity, while adding a solar array to the parking canopy to boost sustainability. Throughout the project, we adhered to VA design guidelines and historic preservation requirements, balancing modern needs with the building's rich history.

Result

The renovation and expansion of Building 3 resulted in a facility that is fully upgraded, meeting the latest VA standards while preserving its historical charm. With expanded pharmacy space, updated administrative offices, and improved ADA compliance, the center now provides enhanced care for veterans. The thoughtful approach to design and construction ensures operational continuity, enabling the center to continue its critical services without interruption.
